When we first moved into our home, I created a curtain rod out of black piping and corbels for my Great Room. It was very inexpensive (about $20 without the corbels) and definitely made a statement. When I found some more corbels at a recent Flea Market, I decided it was time to duplicate the look in my hearth room and replace the store bought curtain rod I had there. All together (including the corbels), it cost me $50, which was the price I paid for the plain curtain rod I had there. And I think this one is much more interesting! What do you think?
I started with these uber cool corbels purchased for $15 a piece at a local flea market. They were pretty dirty so I cleaned them up and sprayed them with a matt poly. I liked their chippiness, so I choose not to paint them.
I went to my local hardware store and purchased the piping and attached pieces. Don't ask me their official names...I just call them "thingamajigs". They come in either silver or black, but black worked better in my home. When you buy the pipes at the hardware store, they will thread them for you as you will obviously need specific lengths.
Okay, I guess I know the "technical name" for the round pieces. They're called flanges. I used anchors and black screws to attach them to the wall.
I then measured the distance of the pipes to the corbel, and attached the corbel to the wall.
I attached a flange to the end of one of the pipes.
I then screwed the other end into the "t" center piece.
The end with the flange was then attached to the corbel. Be sure to have the curtain on the rod before you secure it! Haha!
Repeat for the other side and wa-la! A unique, one of a kind curtain rod!
And I didn't even need help from my hubby to do it. Okay, maybe I had him hold the rod while I screwed it in. But it was really a simple project. Do I seem impressed with myself? LOL! And I think it turned out darn good if I do say so myself (can you hear me patting myself on the back?)!!

I love it. I need something like that above my french doors. You got a great deal on the corbels and your right, curtain rods cost just as much, but don't have the great feel of your handmade one.
