Ahoy Mate! It's Junk Repurposed with a Coastal Theme.

While out and about at some local occasional sales, I stumbled upon this vintage porthole. I've come across them before, usually made out of brass, but this one in particular really intriqued me. I liked the great hardware and patina, but the green paint?  Not so much. But I knew it was a diamond in the rough and all it needed was a little tlc.

And while I'm not a big fan of forest green, the rest of it was just so amazing.

While I could have gone the paint stripping route, I thought a touch of green paint showing through might not be all that bad and even add to the patina.  So I decided to wet sand the sides.  It only had one coat of paint, so it was relatively simple

And after that, just a little poly was all it needed to finished off the piece.

The hardware on the piece--way cool.

And the patina? Wow!

Some fish plates and a vintage float add to the coastal theme.

So a vintage porthole turned out to be a unique table riser. Who'd of thunk it?

You did a wonderful job-I have an entire marine-themed living room wall that also 'leaks' down to a big shelving unit, filled with shells, an old compass box, and a collection of lighthouses..you've given me some inspiration for a blog of my own! To top it all off, my word verification here was 'codfan'-serendipitous to boot!

Hi Lanette! Do you remember me? I remember you from when you worked at the Round Barn :) I like your little project, it turned out great. I was thinking maybe it wasn't green paint on the outside of that porthole...maybe its made out of copper?

I absolutely adore it, Lanette!
Now I'm gonna be on the lookout for a porthole, too. :-)

Have a great Tuesday!

Anne

Hey Lovey....I LOVE what you've done with this PORTHOLE....hahahahaha....My eyes are a tad sore at the mo & when I read it first time around I thought you were talking about a pothole which made me think of the porta pottie things in Texas....yarrrrrrr....I think I'm suffering from Junk overload....OR I've been scarred for life after using one of those HORRID contraptions....hahahaha....!

You asked when a good time to visit would be & I would say, around the 20th January 2011 would be GREAT as the Fryerstown Antique Fair is held a couple of hours away from me....Vendors & buyers come from all over the country....NOTHING like Junk Bonanza or Texas but it's the BIGGEST vintage event we have....Alternatively, end February early March when the next SVJ-Extravaganza is due to take place....You're BOTH welcome at my place....!!

I'l be back with a glass or FOUR of wine this evening to read back through your FABULOUS blog....!

In the mean time....Cheers from Oz,
Tamarah :o)

This refurbishment is definitely one of my favorites that I've seen in awhile. It has a beachy feel, yet is so elegant. I came across your post this afternoon while browsing interior design blogs and your take on interior décor is exquisite. Are there any window treatments that would look best with this kind of decor? It is true that you must dress your windows appropriately to bring out their true beauty. Thank you for writing and as a special thanks to you and your readers, I would like to offer a 20% off coupon using this code upon checkout: BLG20.

You've got some vision there-I wouldn't have thought of anything to do with that-great things come from great minds!

I wasn't really a fan of the green paint either. I'm glad you changed it up.
